The African Geothermal Association (AGA) is dedicated to the promotion, development, and utilization of geothermal energy across the African continent. As a leading voice in the geothermal sector, AGA plays a pivotal role in driving sustainable energy solutions, fostering innovation, and building capacity to harness Africa’s vast geothermal potential.

Our Mission

Our mission is to encourage, facilitate, and promote the coordination of activities related to the research, development, and application of geothermal resources in Africa. We aim to advance knowledge sharing, support capacity building, and drive technological advancements in geothermal energy.

    We work to encourage and facilitate coordination among stakeholders involved in geothermal research, development, and application in Africa.

The team

Meet the team.

  • Dr. Stephen Omenda, PhD
    President, African Geothermal Association

    Dr. Peter Omenda has over 35 years of experience in geothermal project development, pioneering projects in Kenya and Africa. He has worked with GDC, KenGen, and Scientific and Engineering Power Consultants. Dr. Omenda aims for sustainable geothermal resource development across Africa.

  • Solomon Kebede, MSc
    Secretary, African Geothermal Association

    Mr. Solomon Kebede is a senior geologist/geochemist with over 40 years of experience, primarily with the Geological Survey of Ethiopia. He has extensive expertise in geothermal exploration and policy guidance. Recently, he coordinated the drilling project at Aluto for Ethiopian Electric Power and has participated in geothermal training and professional leadership activities across Africa.

  • Abdelazim Ahmed Osman
    Vice President, International Affairs

    Mr. Solomon Kebede is a senior geologist/geochemist with over 40 years of experience, primarily with the Geological Survey of Ethiopia. Our Structure

The AGA is governed by a Board of Directors and supported by various permanent committees. Our office bearers, including the Chairperson, Vice-Chairperson, Secretary, Assistant Secretary, Treasurer, and Assistant Treasurer, are elected at the annual general meeting. The Board of Directors oversees the management of the association, while the permanent committees focus on specific areas such as finance, audit, membership, information and education, and research.
