Ethiopia is endowed with large geothermal potential. So far 26 prospect areas of high to medium enthalpy geothermal resources have been identified with an estimated electrical potential of over 10,000 MW
The only power plant so far installed is 8.5 Mw binary unit at Aluto. Additional 5 MW well head plant is under commissioning same place.
The public sector is currently engaged in deep drillings at Aluto Langano with over 23 Mwe steam so far confirmed. Projects to conduct additional exploratory drillings in Multiple prospects have started by the public developer, EEP.
A private developer has drilled deep wells at Tulu Moye prospect and currently is assessing the resource. Another private company is preparing to drill at Corbetti prospect.
Hundreds of Mws are expected to be developed from private and public investments by 2030.
